Our Shop Coyote Mustang Breaks Records at NMRA All Ford Nationals at BeechBend Raceway!

By October 13, 2017 August 21st, 2019 News, Shop Car Updates

We took our shop 2014 Mustang GT Coyote down to the lovely city of Bowling Green, KY this past weekend to take part in the NMRA All Ford World Finals at Beech Bend Raceway Park!

EVENT8_NMRA_BEECHBEND_10

Our shop car was chosen to run in the Roush Super Stang class as well as the Q1 True Street class. The Super Stang class is a reaction time, bracket style class where you chase or race based on dial in time (or index time). The True Street class is a big class that consists of all types of mustangs, from old to new. The class runs a 30 mile cruise together, then pulls back into the track and lines up. They each make 3 consecutive passes to prove that they are “true street cars”. Then awards for True Street are given out based on averages to set numbers.

We are very proud of what this car has accomplished and can’t wait to improve it even more, as we believe we can increase the spark advance and some other tweaks to the car to get it to run high 9.5s.  We did take the car on the scale here at this event, and with the driver and a half tank of gas in the car, the car weighed right at 3940lbs. Thats right, a FULL WEIGHT street car.

We recently received a call from a Roush Representative who confirmed that we broke the Roush TVS2300 record for 2011-2014 Coyote Mustangs. (More info to come on this via the upcoming article.)

This Mustang simply has a forged lower end, stock Roush TVS 2300 (no porting or housing upgrades), E85, Kooks Headers, and our custom Vector Motorsports Tuning. This coyote has STOCK heads, stock cams, stock displacement, stock 6R80 transmission, stock converter, stock rear end, etc. This car is only on 15 lbs of boost and makes about 700 or less on our Mustang Dynamometer. 9.7s in a 3940 lbs car is pretty stout!

We have NO nitrous, no meth, no intercooler upgrades or ice box tanks, none of that! Its the stock, basic intercooler that Roush included in their kit! For a list of the cars full modifications, continue to read down for full specs!

The goal of this Coyote Mustang was simple. We wanted to showcase our Coyote capabilities for our customers as well as prove our performance packages via real race results. We also want to prove that the Roush TVS2300 was fully capable of propelling a full weight Coyote Mustang into the 9s consistently at the track, all while maintaining the overall manners, reliability and street-ability of a typical factory Mustang for the daily driver.

After getting inquiries and feedback from a lot of people and their experience with other shops, we were told that getting these Coyotes into the 9s would require thousands of dollars of additional modifications, weight reduction, and so on… So, we wanted to prove them wrong. We have watched other shops struggle to get 2.9L twin screws into the 9s without additional aids as well. Not only that, we have seen car after car with ice box intercooler systems, extreme weight reduction modifications, aftermarket transmissions and converters, heads and cams, nitrous, etc. Our Coyote has none of that! And we are running this car with full 19″ factory street tires in the front, and 17″ drag radials in the back, no 15″ or slick/skinny combinations!

Results:

Q1 True Street

For True Street, Sam drove the car and made two consistent 9.7 passes. To try to compete for the 10 second average trophy, she tried to sandbag the final run and at the end, lifted coasting in at 8.222. After doing the math, the average came in at 9.93 which is only .07 off of the perfect 10 second award winner. However, since we “broke” the 10 second mark, and even had the closer average to 10, it was lower and therefore the higher winner won (we did not know we had to be higher than 10 and not lower until after the fact, but owell). We were pretty happy with the results and the consistency of the car as well as the control we had with the car to run a slower run on command to get that close to our goal!

Roush Super Stang

Let’s start off by telling you that this was Samantha’s very first ever index racing competition. She took this mustang to unbelievable numbers this weekend, maintaining CONSISTENT 9.7s at over 140+ mph with 1.40 60ft times. She was able to grab the top qualifier numbers for MPH and ET time in this SST (Roush Super Stang) class at this BG event. Once the elimination rounds started, she throttled ahead and drove smart to beat her competition and still maintain a 9.80 dial in index time.

Round 1 was easy, Sam was the chaser, she caught up to the first opponent and let off the gas and coasted through the finish line for the win. For the Quarter Finals, Samantha was matched up with a seasoned pro in this racing event. Her opponent took off, and Sam had to chase, she noticed her opponent going way faster than his dial in time and as she was pulling hard on him, saw him hitting the brakes before the line, and Sam managed to still beat him to the line, and both racers broke out of their dial in times, but Sam went a 9.778 and was able to move on by the “first or worse” ruling. For the Semi Finals, she was lined up with another good racer. She had to do the chasing once again, and unfortunately, her opponent cut a really good light and she was barely able to catch him at the finish line, but hoping he was going to break out and having nothing to lose, Sam lifted before the finish to stay in her dial time just in case her opponent did not, however, he barely made his dial time and she was knocked out. Good racing by everyone in the class!

But no worries, we are very proud of what our 2014 Coyote Mustang has accomplished overall at Bowling Green. This was our first official trip to an NMRA event and we think that 3rd place in SST is a huge accomplishment! What we are most happy about, is the consistency of the car and the numbers we are getting out of it.

Overall, we had a very successful weekend at Beech Bend Raceway, and met a lot of very wonderful people along the way who shared the same passion for everything Mustang! We want to throw out a huge THANK YOU to all of our sponsors who have contributed to the car, as well as a huge thank you to the entire Vector Motorsports Team for helping to build this monster Coyote!

Parts Research & Development Review/Summary:

Pedders Suspension

We have been working closely with Pedders Suspension to test their kits on our shop cars for various applications. Our 2014 Mustang has their XA Extreme Coilover Kit on the car which has been proven in road race situations but mostly untested for a drag racing car. When we installed the kit, we were very happy with the adjustability and the new ride height for appearance. We also were immediately impressed with the drivability and new handling capability on the street, especially around these curvy roads out here. The stock system would create so much body roll and was unable to hold the turn hard, and also had horrible headlight dive when brakes were applied. Thats all cured! We were slightly concerned with the kit being able to transfer the weight from front to back at a track launch, however we were pleasantly surprised. The car hits hard, pulls the front wheels off the ground just enough and maintains a positive forward movement with no bouncing. The car pulls straight down the track! The kit also responds very well to roll racing type actions by squatting and planting off the hit on a hard downshift and maintains a positive forward motion. Overall, we are very happy with this XA Extreme Coilover Kit as it performs much better than expected! Not only does it work for the track, it also feels much better in daily driving environments!

Carbinite

We have done testing on this car with a regular 63mm pulley as well as a Carbinite Coated 63mm pulley. On the dyno, we saw a slight increase in RWHP & RWTQ results, as well as noticing a slightly more consistent boost trace. Where we noticed the most difference between the pulleys was on the street and at the track. The car maintains boost through the pulleys with little evidence of belt slip. Although we do see much more belt dust as a result of running the Carbinite pulley, we prefer it over the non-coated pulley because of its improved performance and boost reliability.
